Bamboo Fact of the Day!!!!:

Bamboo never changes in diameter. The diameter is set by the type of bamboo. The new shoot emerges from the ground at full width, and already containing all the diaphragm/node things it will ever have. Then as it grows, the column essentially just stretches out as the distance between nodes increases.

Betcha didn't know THAT!

Actually I always wondered about that. We have a patch of bamboo in our back yard (planted by that world-wandering, exotic plant-collecting sea captain who lived here before us)> It shoots out of the ground at a tremendous rate but always at the same thickness and I was wondering what I could do to make it heftier. But now I know: Nothing I can do! (-except make bansuri flutes out of it. It's the perfect width for flutes).
